Dr. Jayanie B. Weeratna
She is presently attached to the Institute of Legal Medicine and Toxicology in Colombo and responsible for providing forensic odontology opinion in medico-legal cases. She has been involved in Forensic Odontology investigations in Sri Lanka since 2003. She is a member of the International Police Organization (INTERPOL), Odontology working group and Work as an Independent consultant for the International Committee of Red Cross and Red Crescent since 2015. She obtained her Bachelor’s Degree in Dental Surgery from the University of Peradeniya and proceeded to University of Cardiff, UK as a Commonwealth Scholar, where she completed the Master of Forensic Odontology Degree. She has also completed the Diploma in Forensic Medicine and Science from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo. She is also an Attorney-at-Law of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka. A trainer and Examiner in Forensic Odontology since 2007 at the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine Colombo Sri- Lanka, Faculty of Dental Sciences University of Peradeniya, and also at the Faculty of Medicine University of Kelaniya. Trainer and Examiner for the Postgraduate Diploma in Forensic Anthropology and Odontology, at the Yenepoya Medical College, Mangalore, India. She has published her work in indexed and peer reviewed journals. She is a Co- author and a trainer in training First Responders in management of the dead at the scene in disasters and catastrophes.
She has also Co-authored the National guidelines on Management of the dead in Disasters and Catastrophes, the Protocol for the Management of Fragmentary Human Remains in Disasters and Catastrophes for Asia Pacific Medico Legal Agencies and the Protocol for the Recognition of Abuse and Neglect and implementation of Correction; for Oral Care Practitioners in the Commonwealth countries. She is a Co-founder of the Asia Pacific Forensic Odontology Group and Involved in training Forensic Odontologist and popularizing Forensic Odontology in Nepal and Pakistan.
